UNITED KINGDOM: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) seized over 26 tonnes of frozen chicken on June 8 at the Bukit Kayu Hitam border checkpoint, suspecting the use of a fake halal certificate for importation. The seizure, conducted with the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis), involved a consignment worth RM208,320. Initial checks revealed discrepancies between the certificate's details and the system records, prompting a verification process. The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the integrity of halal certifications in Malaysia.
The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) plays a crucial role in verifying these certificates to ensure compliance. This case underscores the importance of strict regulatory measures to prevent the infiltration of falsely certified products into the Malaysian market. "The matter was then referred to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) for verification, and on June 12, Jakim confirmed that the halal certificate submitted was fake," he said. The seizure's impact extends beyond the immediate confiscation, as it raises awareness about potential syndicates involved in producing fake halal documents. Authorities like AKPS and MAQIS are committed to strengthening border controls and collaborating with enforcement agencies to safeguard food security and uphold the integrity of halal certification in Malaysia.
