Why President Xi’s Outreach to Taiwan Might Not Work

Apr 12, 2026

TAIWAN: President Xi Jinping's recent meeting with KMT leader Cheng Li-wun was supposed to be a step forward in mending cross-strait relations.. During the Friday meeting, Xi expressed his willingness to collaborate with all political parties in Taiwan.! Sounds promising, right?. But, here's the thing—many are skeptical about any real progress coming from this meeting..

After all, Taiwan's political landscape is complex. and previous attempts at fostering unity haven't exactly borne fruit. To give you a bit of background, Cheng Li-wun's rise to leadership in the Kuomintang came amid existing tensions in Taiwan.! Interestingly, The KMT itself is seen as more China-friendly compared to other political parties.

but that doesn't automatically mean smooth sailing…. In fact, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Taiwan's ruling party. has historically been wary of China's overtures.! Add to that the ongoing diplomatic balancing act involving countries like the U.S.

and St. Vincent, and you've got a recipe for complicated negotiations.. So, what does all this mean for the future?… Well, don't hold your breath for a breakthrough anytime soon.!

People are hopeful, but until there's more concrete action. it’s hard to say if this will lead to any significant changes.. For now, it seems like more of the same diplomatic dance. with both sides cautiously watching each other's next moves.?

It's a wait-and-see game, and only time will tell if Xi's outreach will gain any real traction in Taiwan's political sphere.
